Even though Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta, it feels like a village. Can Tho itself doesn’t have really significant dishes, but it has a lot of dishes popular in the Southern Vietnam. You can try all these dishes in restaurants, at the streets or at the lively food street: De Tham!
- Nem Nuong Cai Rang
The famous grilled pork roll, which is made from fresh minced pork. They sweep and then kneaded it into round meatballs. After that, it gets grilled on a hot coal stove. People eat it with green banana, herbs, pineapple, cucumber, starfruit, etc. You eat it by taking a half rice paper in your hand, add vegetables and then put a grilled pork roll on. Roll it all and eat it with a special sauce. It’s kind of the same as a spring roll that’s packed with flavor.
- Lau Mam (hot pot)
Lau Mam has a hot pot idea. The main ingredient of this dish is salted fish made of Ca Linh. Mixed lean and fat meat, eel, snail, soya curd. are coming with the fish.Among the meat, you’ll get fresh vegetables such as water-lily, colza, coriander, water hyacinth, banana flower, lotus rootstock and more.
- Banh Tam Bi (Vietnamese spaghetti)
A very popular (breakfast) dish in Southern Vietnam and definitely worth to try. It is a Vietnamese spaghetti made from a thick rice noodle which is steamed and served with clear fish sauce, fried pork, coconut milk, vegetables, bean sprouts & pickled vegetable. You can add stir-fried spring onions with fat on top. This mixed together gives a unique sweet and salty taste.
- Banh Tet La Cam
Perfect for sticky rice lovers! Made from fragrant sticky rice soaked with la cam to get a purple colour. When it’s well-done, it gets covered with meat, egg and green bean. The wrap is filled with egg or meat and wrapped in banana leaf. The texture is gelatinous and it has a strongly meat or egg taste.
- Chuoi nep nuong
The most popular dish in the Mekong delta region. A banana wrapped in sticky rice, grilled and served with coconut milk. Mostly, eaten as a dessert or treat. You can also find it all over Saigon as street food.
