1.0 About Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh, also known as, is considered the centre of Vietnamese trade and is the largest city in the country with 8 million inhabitants. It is seen as the most hectical city in Vietnam with plenty things to discover for every target audience. 


The city is a mix of the old city from the war and colonial and the new city nowadays. With ancient temples and traditional markets to a metropolis of skyscrapers. From cheap dining at the streets to a high class dinner in a classy restaurant or drinking beers at bia hoi stalls. And all that is findable in almost every street.


There are 24 districts in Ho Chi Minh and you will find most attractions, night clubs, shops, bars and restaurants in District 1 to 5. Very interesting in Ho Chi Minh are the amount of highlights. Visit the War Remnants Museum or visit the Cu Chi tunnels, which were used to hide from the enemy, to go back in the history of Vietnam. Go away for a day with a boat tour to Mekong Delta or go to a waterpark to escape the heat.
In short: Ho Chi Minh has many opportunities to discover more about the country. If you have little time, plan everything right and try to enjoy Ho Chi Minh as much as possible. Note: be aware of your stuff because it is more common that bags and telephones are stolen.

How to get there?

  1. By plane
    Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), the largest airport in Vietnam, is about 8 kilometers located from the heart of the centre.
  2. Taxi
    You can order a taxi at the airport, but you can also walk outside and find a driver. They drive mostly with the meter, but sometimes you can discuss about a price.
    Average price: 180,000 VND
    Time: 30 minutes
  3. Local bus
    * Bus 152 - to city center
    A cheap option is to take the local bus. It has a green color. You can find the bus right in front of the arrival’s entrances. Turn right when you walk out of the terminal arrival and walk across the median. You see the car pick up lines and also the Vietnamese and English signs pointing your way.
    Average price: 5,000 + luggage
    Time: an hour (more stops) 
  4. Mini bus
    There are new dedicated airport shuttles going straight to District 1 and the Ben Thanh Market. There are different colored busses, but take the yellow bus.
    * Bus 109 - to district 1 - departs every 15 - 20 minutes from 5.30 a.m. to 1.30 a.m.
    Average price: 20,000 VND
    Time: 45 minutes
    * Bus 49 - drops you at your accommodation
    Average price: 40,000 VND
    Time: 45 minutes
  5. By Train
    Ga Sai Gon is the train station of Ho Chi Minh and is located at 1 Nguyen Thong Street in District 3. The train between Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi stops at Phan Thiet, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue and Dong Hoi. You can buy the tickets at the train station or at travel agencies.

    Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh: 35 hours, 1,400,000 VND
    Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh: 17 hours, 825,000 VND
    Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh: 7.5 hours, 500,000 VND 
  6. By Bus
    You can take busses from almost everywhere. It will take a long time if you will come from the north or central of Vietnam. You might consider going by train or flight to save time.
