1.0 About Hoi An
Hoi An is with its traditional architecture, beautiful highlights and more relaxed atmosphere one of the most favorite places in Vietnam. If you think about Hoi An, you think of narrow streets with colonial houses with moss covered tiles, a gorgeous river and cheerful color lanterns everywhere. This charming old preserved city is definitely worth a visit!
The city is a combination of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and European influences from the 16th century. Hoi An used to be an important link along the Thu Bon River, where merchant ships could trade goods with Southeast Asia.
More than justified is the fact that Hoi An has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. The beauty of the city can’t be denied. With rice terraces, the Thu Bon River and the charming streets which creates a great environment.
There are many things to do around Hoi An. Take a bike or motorbike and discover the beautiful surroundings or take a boat trip along the Thu Bon River with local Sampan rowers. Between April and October is the possibility to dive on the Cham Islands.
How to get there?
The closest airport is 30 kilometers from Hoi An, Da Nang International Airport (DAD). You can travel from and to the most popular places in Vietnam and also from nearby countries.
Get a taxi for about 30 minutes to Hoi An. Price should, depending on you drop-of point, not be more than 300,000 VND. The green taxis ‘Vinasun’ or ‘Mai Linh’ are the most trustworthy.
- Private transfer
You can get a private transfer at your accommodation. This can be a little cheaper than a taxi.
- Minibus shuttles
There are companies that offer shuttle buses. The price will be around 100,000 VND. You must book a ticket in advance at a travel agency or your accommodation.
The closest train station is also in Da Nang. From there on you can take the same options as when you arrive at the airport. There is also a public bus #1 (yellow bus) going from the train station to Hoi An. The price is about 20,000 VND, but can be more for foreigners.
If you are departing from a distant destination such as Hanoi, keep in mind that the TN trains are slower. The prices below are average prices. They depend on what type of train you have.

The best way to get to Hoi An by bus, is with an open bus ticket or with a organized bus which you can book at travel agencies or your accommodation. But another option is to
- Hanoi: takes about 16 hours, around 600,000 VND
- Ho Chi Minh City: takes about 11 hours, around 250,000 VND
- Hue: takes about 4 hours, around 150,000 VND
- Nha Trang: takes about 11 hours, around 250,000 VND
- Da Lat: takes about 15 hours, around 300,000 VND
- Da Nang: takes about 1,5 hours, around 140,000 VND
- Mui Ne: takes about 15 hours, around 360,000 VND
- Phong Nha: combination train and bus, about 8 hours, around 800,000 VND
