1.1 Top Spots- Hue

  • Imperial Citadel
    Back in the days, it was officially housing the Emperor’s palace, temples and residence. This building is a symbol of wealth and power with the locals. The city is protected by 2 by 2 kilometers of land and inside the citadel, the city is located with a 2.5 kilometers long wall. Another name for the city is '' Purple Forbidden City '', because only the inner enclosure of the imperial family had access to it. It was built in the 17th century by Emperor Gia Long. The city is full of beautiful palaces, pagodas and tombs.

  • Hoang Thanh (Royal Citadel)
    The most important citadel in the Imperial City. They started building in 1804 and finished in 1833. Each wall is 600 meter long, 4 meters high and 1 meter thick. There are four gates to enter and the Ngo Mon Gate was only reserved for the King.

  • Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel)
    This citadel is reserved for the Emperor and his family. It was constructed in 1804 by Emperor Gia Long. The walls are 1,230 meters in circumference, 3,72 meters high and 0,72 meters thick. In the front side stands the Dai Cung Mong.

Emperors Tombs 

  • Minh Mang
    This tomb has a Chinese architecture and is surrounded by trees and lakes. It was constructed between 1840 and 1843

  • Khai Dinh
    It took about eleven years to build this impressive grave. Khai Dinh is located on Mount Chau Chu, which offers beautiful views. The architecture is a mix of styles such as India and Roman influences. With great sculptures and 37 steps to the gate, it is worth a visit.

  • Tu Duc
    A very beautiful tomb with a huge lake, stone bridges and woorden constructions. It was constructed in 1864 and took three years to finish. The tomb was used as a Summer Palace and retreat.

  • Dong Khanh
    The smallest tomb in the imperial, which was actually a temple dedicated to the Emperor’s father. It has French influences with terracotta sculptures.

  • Thien Mu Pagoda
    This 21 meter one-pillar pagoda was built in mid-19th century by Emperor Thieu Tri and is the oldest in Hue. It has a natural setting with ancient architecture and the purpose was to spread Buddhism. The pagoda is surrounded with a garden of plants and flowers and one of the twenty most beautiful landscapes.

  • Tu Dam
    Founded in the 17th century and one of the most ancient ones in Hue. Inside of the gate, you find a bid bodhi tree. It is an important center where people celebrate Buddha’s birthday every year. The pagoda is mentioned with a magnificent bronze statue of Sakyamuni.

  • Tu Hieu
    One of the most special pagodas in Hue and nearby the Tu Duc Tomb. The pagoda was founded in 1842 and dedicated to honour the souls of eunuchs of Nguyen dynasties, who are buried beside the pagoda in the graveyard. It is surrounded by a beautiful forest and has a spiritual atmosphere.

    Opening hours: daily chanting at 04:30, 10:00, 16:00 and 19:00

  • Huyen Khong
    This pagoda has an unusual setting and is located on the Cham Mount. It is surrounded with green trees and beautiful flowers. The lake in the front is filled with thousands of colorful nymphaea. A very peaceful and romantic pagoda.

  • Ho Quyen, Tiger Fighting Area
    This arena was built in 1832 and was used for yearly fights between an elephant and a tiger. There haven’t been fights since the early 1900’s, but you can still see claw marks on the walls.

  • Perfume River
    A beautiful river of 80 kilometers long, flowing through the Hue centre. It flows through many aromatic plants and forest. Along the river are many pagodas and other highlights located. You can take paddleboat tour and visit some of these great attractions.

  • Royal Fine Arts Museum
    This museum has a collection of pottery, costumes and porcelain from the Nguyen Dynasty. A very impressive building and has great arts to show.
